As National Safe Boating Week commences, Sportsman Boats highlights essential boating safety tips and the critical role manufacturers play in supporting safe adventures on the water. From life jackets to float plans, this blog shares how smart habits and smart design work together to protect what matters most—everyone on board.
At Sportsman Boats, building boats isn’t just about craftsmanship and performance—it’s about responsibility. We know that every vessel we design carries families, friends, and fellow adventurers into open waters, and nothing matters more than getting them home safely.
That’s why National Safe Boating Week, running from May 17 to 23, is a week we stand firmly behind. Led by the U.S. Coast Guard and supported by state and local partners, it’s a reminder that smart boating practices save lives—and that safety begins well before you untie from the dock.
As a boat manufacturer, safety is a core part of our engineering process. But even the most advanced features can’t replace good decisions on the water. So whether you’re launching a brand-new model or taking the family boat out for the first time this season, here are a few important reminders from our team:
• Wear Your Life Jacket
Every vessel we build is designed to accommodate U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets—and for good reason. Life jackets are one of the most effective ways to prevent tragedy on the water. Choose the right style for your activity, and make sure it fits well. Most importantly: wear it.
• Make a Float Plan
Safety begins before you launch. Let someone know where you’re going, who’s on board, and when you expect to return. It’s a simple step, but one that can save critical time if help is ever needed.
• Boat Sober
Design and technology can only go so far—judgment is everything. Alcohol is the leading contributor to fatal boating accidents. Don’t take the risk. Operating sober ensures you’re making the best decisions for yourself and everyone on board.
• Use Reliable Communication Tools
All of our boats are built to support modern communication systems. Whether it’s a VHF radio or your phone, make sure you have a dependable way to call for help if needed—and know how to use it.
See our blog on how to use your VHF radio. DISTRESS SIGNALING - HOW IT'S DONE
• Invest in Ongoing Training
Many of our customers are experienced boaters, but there’s always more to learn. Verified boating courses —especially those that follow the American National Standard—offer a great way to refresh your skills and gain confidence, especially with a new boat or unfamiliar waters.
##Our Commitment to You
At Sportsman Boats, we build every boat with safety in mind—from intuitive helm layouts to emergency gear storage, anti-slip decking to reinforced hull structures. But safety is a team effort. When responsible boating practices meet intentional design, the result is not only better performance—but peace of mind.
As National Safe Boating Week reminds us, the choices we make on the water matter. Let’s make this summer one to remember—for all the right reasons.
Here’s to a safe, smart, and sensational boating season.
