  • Enter free fall by holding the windlass down button for three seconds and do not exceed five seconds to prevent damage
  • Tie the anchor rode to the cleat inside the anchor locker to take strain off the windlass
  • Maneuver the boat over the anchor when retrieving it instead of relying on the windlass to pull the boat

Anchoring is a key skill every boater should feel confident about, and on the Heritage 321, Yamaha’s windlass anchor system makes it easier than ever. One of the most common questions we receive is how to properly use the free fall function on the windlass, and it’s a simple process once you know the steps.

To start, head to the anchor locker and locate the down button for your windlass. Press and hold it for three seconds, but do not exceed five seconds, as holding it longer can cause permanent damage to the system. After three seconds, the windlass will automatically enter free fall mode, smoothly deploying your anchor.

Once deployed, always tie off the anchor rode to the cleat inside the anchor locker, this takes strain off the windlass and uses the cleat for holding strength. When it’s time to retrieve the anchor, a helpful pro tip is to maneuver your boat directly over the anchor instead of relying on the windlass to pull the boat. This reduces strain on the system and makes retrieval quicker and safer.

With these simple steps, you can anchor with confidence and protect your equipment for years of reliable use.
