  • Sunset cruising is about atmosphere and timing; leave the dock about 45 minutes before sunset to settle in and enjoy postcard views
  • Sandbar evenings turn boating into social rituals with friends, music and snacks, especially when you have a western sunset view
  • The Sportsman Heritage Series blends performance and luxury for family cruising and serious fishing with features such as plush seating and wraparound bolsters as well as JL Audio and LED lighting

Recently my social media pages have filled with pictures of friends and family sending their kids back to school. It’s that subtle reminder that up here in the north summer is starting to wind down. For boaters this is a unique time. On one hand you start to worry about the number of boating days left before getting ready for winter. On the other you know that some of the best boating happens now. Waterways become quieter as people head home from their summer homes and less people are taking vacations. For those still boating it’s a great time on the water. One of my favorite things to do is take a relaxing cruise around the lake after work. Most days with the water seemingly to myself.

As summer begins its slow fade and the days grow shorter, there’s something special about being on the water in those golden hours before nightfall. The air is warm but carries a hint of change, the water reflects the sky’s shifting colors, and the hum of your Sportsman Boat feels perfectly in tune with the moment. For many boaters, this is the time of year when sunset cruises and sandbar evenings take center stage.

A sunset cruise isn’t about speed or distance-it’s about atmosphere. The key is timing. Check your local sunset time and plan to leave the dock about 45 minutes before the sun dips below the horizon. This gives you enough time to settle into the ride, find the perfect vantage point, and capture those postcard-worthy views. Whether you choose a quiet backwater, a scenic bridge, or an open horizon, the beauty of owning a Sportsman is that it can get you there in style and comfort.

If the evening calls for more than just a cruise, drop anchor at a favorite sandbar. These spots become gathering places after hours—friends tying up side-by-side, music playing softly, coolers opening, and the day’s last light dancing on the ripples. Sandbars with a clear western view give you the best sunset show, and as darkness falls, you’ll be perfectly positioned to watch the stars emerge.

Late-summer boating is all about comfort, style, and versatility—qualities that especially define the Sportsman Heritage Series. Designed for both family cruising and serious fishing, the Heritage line blends performance with luxury features that make sunset cruises and sandbar evenings effortless. From plush bow seating and wraparound bolsters to integrated JL Audio systems and LED courtesy lighting, the Heritage Series is built for those moments when you want to slow down, relax, and enjoy the view.

A little preparation goes a long way. Comfortable seating and deck lighting create a welcoming onboard atmosphere, while light snacks and cold drinks keep everyone happy. Your Sportsman JL Audio system can set the tone with a relaxing playlist. And don’t forget to bring along a couple of blankets or light jackets—the temperature can drop quickly once the sun sets.

Cruising after dark is magical, but it calls for extra attention. Ensure navigation lights are on and working, keep a spotlight handy, and use GPS or radar if your boat is equipped. Let someone on shore know your plan and estimated return time, and keep an eye out for other boaters making their way home.

The magic of sunset cruises and sandbar evenings is that they often become traditions. Invite friends who’ve never experienced one before, and you’ll see your own boating lifestyle through fresh eyes. It’s a reminder that owning a Sportsman isn’t just about the ride—it’s about the memories made when the engine idles, the sun sinks, and laughter carries over calm water. See you at sunset!
